Morning walk at Devínska Kobyla

The Small Carpathians just over Bratislava provide a perfect place for a walk. The length and difficulty is completely upon yourself. I try to prove why it's worth of it to have a walk across the forests and meadows of Small Carpathians. This is what I observed during Sunday morning walk.

BIRDS:

Hike in Veľká Fatra

I have spent few last days in the vicinity of Veľká Fatra National Park. Small festival took place in Mošovce. I decided to have a hike on Friday. I had only my smartphone and binoculars so I didn't take any bird photo. I will just mention sightings of soaring Lesser Spotted Eagle, glimpse of lifer Hazel Grouse or singing Tree Pipit and Wood Warbler. Have a look what I have spotted on my hike to Drieňok (alt. 1268m) and Blatnická dolina valley.

Terns and Orchids

Early May is ideal time to spot the species of Marsh Terns on Danube below Bratislava. The number of Black Terns could be as high as 1000 birds. In their flocks also could be found few specimens of White-winged and Whiskered Terns.

During my Thursday's bike trip I observed c470 Black Terns (Chlidonias hybrida). There were also at least 10 White-winged Terns (Chlidonias leucopterus). Unfortunately no Whiskered Tern. On the other hand I was glad to spot 5 Black-necked Grebes (Podiceps nigricollis), 7 Dunlins (Calidris alpina) and 3 Greenshanks (Tringa nebularia). I heard my first Golden Orioles and Reed Warblers of the year. Yearlist after this bike trip stands on 168 bird species. On the way home I found a big group of blooming Military Orchids (Orchis militaris).

Early Spring at Devínska Kobyla

The slopes of Small Carpathians provide perfect conditions for various flowers. Check the photos from our field check walk at Devínska Kobyla in NW Bratislava.

Spring flowers at Devínska Kobyla

We had a walk this afternoon around Sandberg, Bratislava. We hoped to spot finally some spring flowers. It is a 4 weeks later than usually but the joy was even greater. Have a look!
