Early February in Morava Floodplain

After the lifeticks earlier in the week I decided to make a birding walk in Morava floodplain NW from Bratislava. Area offers good habitats for birds of prey. I hoped to spot at least Red Kites or White-tailed Eagles. Near the waste dumping site I found at least 9 Red Kites. I observed short flyover of male Hen Harrier over the embankment. Pair of White-tailed Eagles was roosting in the meadow. After spotting my first Great Grey Shrike of the year I was already satisfied with the walk. I didn't know that I will have an opportunity to spot pair of Eastern Imperial Eagles and as I will walk to railway stop back home I'll find Water Pipit and Green Sandpiper feeding on the gravel bank of Morava River.

Thrush street

I took a short walk in my borough. Just 300m from my flat I spotted small flock of c35 Waxwings. I turned into the Strážnická street. Mistle Thrush was calling from the treetop. Then I stopped at the crossing with Moskovská street. I just took short look at small tree with several Blackbirds. In a minute there was Redwing and later one more. Two Fieldfares appeared and surprisingly one Song Thrush too. It is almost unbelievable that you can spot 5 from 6 Slovak Turdus sp.Thrushes in one street in the center of Bratislava. Ring Ouzel will come in the end of March and certainly couldn't be spotted here as it breeds in mountainous regions outside big towns. In addition I found male Black Redstart on the roof of nearby embassy, Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawks flew over my head. 

Later in the afternoon I observed Peregrine Falcon as it flew over Main square (Hlavné námestie) and c15000 Rooks mixed with Jackdaws that were gathering over Danube before flight to their night roost site.

Search for Waxwings - Redwing found

Waxwings occupy streets of Bratislava 8 weeks in row. My friend asked me to try to check wider centre of Bratislava to estimate number of wintering Waxwings. I decided to search in old town, Sad Janka Kráľa public park, castle hill,garden and squares behind presidential palace. My total number was 362 Waxwings. According to my friend's count and one other birder's we estimate their number around 4500 individuals in Bratislava area. We were shocked when we reached 1000 in December. Again two weeks ago when we counted 2000+ birds and today's count is simply breath-taking. I can't believe that I have seen my first ever Waxwings only two month ago and now I'm part of the team that tries to monitor them during the whole time of their stay in the city.

(In following days were photos from this count revised and one other birder's observation was added. Total number stands on 5112 Waxwings.)

But one can't forget also other birds. Yearlist tick Peregrine Falcon with caught Feral Pigeon. Fieldfares made my highest count today(800+). And in the flock of c700 Fieldfares and c100 Waxwings I have also found one Redwing (another yearlist tick). It was second time this winter that I spotted 4 different Turdus sp. thrushes in few minutes(Blackbird, Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare, Redwing).

Walk in the fields

Day started with great observation of flock of 150+ Waxwings. Some of them were roosting on the TV aerial on the opposite roof.

I decided to make a walk across the fields between Rožňava and Jovice. I hoped to spot some uncommon Rough-legged Buzzard. There were only the Common ones and some other birds. Let's check it.

I thought that nothing could beat today's Waxwings but I was wrong. To be honest it was an "owlsome" mistake...

Early Spring Floods on Morava River - pt. 2

[Saturday, March 3, 2012]

After spotting my first White Wagtail (Motacilla alba) of the season and trio of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor) I moved on. There was handful of great landscape views ahead.

 My walk continued along Malina river. Plenty of Tits were singing in the trees and reeds.

 I was passing by flooded areas.

 Another wading was ahead. The reward came with 4 Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) and at least 7 Great Egrets (Egretta alba). Unfortunately without any usable photo.

 At this point water stopped me again. Herons and Egrets were behind that reed.

Fieldfares were feeding on the unflooded parts of meadow.

Few tens of meters further I had this great detailed observation of another Fieldfare.

After Wagtail I found another sign of spring. European Common Brown Frog (Rana temporaria) was almost without any sign of action. It is typical early spring behavior.

Back to the Morava river. One of the last Goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula) of this winter. In the following days and weeks they will fly due north to their breeding sites.

Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) on the slope of viaduct means that spring is definitely here.

 Hooded Crows (Corvus cornix) were feeding in the field. In the background you can see the western end of Carpathians in Slovakia. Its name is Devínska Kobyla.

The mountain is getting closer. Bus stop is only 25 minutes away.

I thought this would be the end of birdwatching on Saturday but I was wrong. Friend called me that he needs some photos of sandy habitats with coniferous trees so I joined him to make a short stop near Plavecký Štvrtok. While he was taking pictures I spotted 3 Mistle Thrushes (Turdus viscivorus). As he came back he just asked me if I have ever seen the Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus). I answered no. He said me to try to use voice record that I have in my phone. Immediately one Crested Tit landed on the top of pine and started to sing. I could have not believed how it is possible to collect a lifelist tick on demand in a while. This was the last common Tit that I missed in my lifelist. Only very rare Azure Tit (Cyanistes cyanus) remains unchecked. After this great experience I knew that I had a perfect early spring day.
